Endocrine Development Vol 12 : Development of the Pancreas and Neonatal Diabetes / R. Scharfmann
Titre : Endocrine Development Vol 12 : Development of the Pancreas and Neonatal Diabetes Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : R. Scharfmann, Auteur ; J. P. H. Shield, Auteur ; P. E. Mullis, Auteur Editeur : Karger Année de publication : 2007 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-8055-8385-5 Langues : Français (fre) Catégories : Endocrinologie Résumé : It is now clear that abnormal pancreas development can give rise to specific forms of diabetes. Thus, the study of human and animal pancreatic developmental biology, one of the main focuses of the current volume of 'Endocrine Development', is crucial - also in order to define new treatments for diabetes based on cell therapy or regenerative medicine. This publication presents in vivo and in vitro techniques to investigate pancreas development and islet cell function. Besides, a series of reviews are included dealing with genetics. Amongst others, the transcription factors in pancreatic development are observed, and the distinct roles of HNF1beta, HNF1alpha, and HNF4alpha in regulating pancreas development, beta-cell function and growth are studied in detail. A further point under discussion is genomic imprinting and its impact on the pancreas. Special emphasis is placed on the investigation, management and treatment of neonatal diabetes. This collection written by outstanding scientists and clinicians is a valuable reference for endocrinologists, geneticists and pancreatic developmental scientists alike. Titre : Endocrine Development Vol 15 : Endocrinopathy After Childhood Cancer Treatment Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : W. H. B. Wallace, Auteur ; C. J. H. Kelnar, Auteur ; P. E. Mullis, Auteur Editeur : Karger Année de publication : 2009 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-8055-9037-2 Langues : Français (fre) Catégories : Endocrinologie Résumé : Continuing advances in the management of childhood malignancies result in a rapidly growing number of childhood cancer survivors. However, many of them experience treatment-induced `late effects' including a significant number of endocrine dysfunctions. In this book experts in the field of late effects of childhood cancer treatment offer clinical insight into pertinent issues such as the impact of cancer therapies on growth, puberty and hypothalamic and pituitary function, male and female fertility, obesity, and metabolic and bone problems. Multidisciplinary long-term follow-up of these patients is essential to monitor, treat and prevent morbidity. Therefore this volume is of great interest to pediatric endocrinologists and oncologists, adult and reproductive endocrinologists, primary care practitioners, nurses and nurse practitioners as well as others involved in planning and delivering the holistic care which this increasingly numerous and important group of patients requires. Summarizing current knowledge, the physiology of calcium, magnesium and phosphate metabolism, the technique of bone biopsy and uses and pitfalls of bone density scanning are discussed. The main part of this publication describes in detail the disorders associated with hypocalcemia, hypercalcemia, rickets, phosphate metabolism, primary and secondary osteoporosis. The genetic nature of many of these conditions is highlighted and each condition is referred to by the number of its OMIM entry. The final chapter, which distinguishes this book from previous publications on the topic, comprises case reports illustrating some of the problems that are examined in previous chapters. This comprehensive account of disorders related to bone and mineral metabolism makes essential reading for pediatric endocrinologists as well as for clinicians who wish to gain a practical understanding of this important topic. Cappa, Auteur Editeur : Karger Année de publication : 2011 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-8055-9643-5 Langues : Français (fre) Catégories : Endocrinologie Résumé : Written by experts and specialized investigators, this book presents a detailed overview of the recent progress in our understanding of the adrenal cortex and its pivotal roles in homeostasis. Genes, molecules and cell compartments directly or indirectly involved in the complex steroidogenesis pathway as well as the resulting end-hormones glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids and androgens are analyzed. Furthermore, the defects of the genes responsible both for common and rare adrenal disorders are presented. The interactions of the adrenal cortices with the adrenal medulla and their importance in the integration of adrenocortical and adrenomedullary function are discussed. The complex molecular pathophysiology of congenital adrenal hyperplasia is presented; long-term effects of the disorder and the still controversial antenatal therapy are examined. Finally, expert review chapters discuss autoimmune Addison disease and the adrenoleukodystrophy/adrenomyeloneuropathy syndrome. Presenting novel research findings in adrenal gland physiology and pathophysiology, this book is a useful tool not only for pediatric endocrinologists, but also for clinicians and researchers studying human development, organogenesis, mitochondrial biology, nuclear receptors, stress biology and pharmacology. Nilsson, Auteur Editeur : Karger Année de publication : 2011 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-8055-9792-0 Langues : Français (fre) Catégories : Endocrinologie Résumé : In systemic childhood diseases, including cancer, gastrointestinal, pulmonary and cardiac disorders, childhood growth is severely impaired. In addition, almost 400 known genetic diseases inhibit the ability of the growth plate to form new bone, leaving affected children with growth failure and bony deformities which can severely impact their quality of life and may lead to morbidity and early mortality. This book provides a comprehensive review of bone and cartilage development, growth and disease. Focusing on novel treatment strategies, regulatory signals and molecular mechanisms are discussed in relation to the diseases affecting them. Furthermore, novel methodologies in bone and cartilage research based on recent advances in skeletal stem cell biology, cartilage tissue engineering and allele-specific gene silencing is covered. Providing insight into the basic mechanisms of bone growth, structure and metabolism, research methodology, as well as discussing the clinical management of related diseases, this book is of particular value to physicians with a special interest in bone and cartilage biology; in particular endocrinologists and pediatric endocrinologists that see patients with growth disorders, osteoporosis, osteogenesis imperfecta, and skeletal dysplasias.
